Student Group SDS banned by Evergreen State College

Olympia Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) has been suspended by The Evergreen State College (TESC) administration for the remainder of the academic year and will face probation until January 2009. The suspension means that SDS has lost its budget and office, can no longer hold meetings, book events, or use school facilities and equipment.

After Evergreen’s February 14th dead prez concert and the ensuing

uprising, the college imposed a ban on all concerts. Several weeks before the so called “concert moratorium” was created, SDS had planned to hold two events on Friday March 7th. The administration

used the moratorium to cancel SDS’s pre-scheduled and pre-approved events two days before they were to take place. SDS and the speakers and performers from the two events decided to go through with the events without administrative approval with the understanding that the cancellations were unjust and a direct attack on free speech. The administration responded by suspending SDS’s status as a student group.

There is one more appeal available to SDS before all official channels of petition have been exhausted. SDS plans to file their last appeal, but regardless will continue this struggle for a say in the functioning of the Evergreen campus and community by all means available and necessary.

Mecca Normal Benefit for Books For Prisoners

Saturday, May 3 at 6pm, Dumpster Values, 302 4th Avenue, Olympia

Mecca Normal will be performing new songs and holding an Art Auction to

benefit Books for Prisoners. We created the art on the themes of "Freedom" and "Malachi" -- which is also the title of our newest song about war protester Malachi Ritscher. Some of the art and the new songs are up on our MySpace blog.

www.myspace.com/meccanormal.

The event takes place at Dumpster Values. It is the launch of their new $1 clothing bin / stage (I gotta see this unit) where the $1 clothing sales go to Books for Prisoners -- which gave us the idea for the Art Auction.

Other Mecca Normal news: Jean Smith is editing a final draft of her novel and she has a story and artwork in the upcoming Art of Touring book (Yeti Publishing). David Lester is working on his graphic novel The Listener www.myspace.com/the_listener_graphicnovel -- and David has art in the just published REPRODUCE & REVOLT! (Soft Skull).
