Local Reproductive Rights Activist Lois Ashway Walker Dies

author : WIP topic : Reproductive Rights

by WIP

Works In Progress was saddened to learn of the recent death of Lois Walker, local reproductive rights activist. Lois was a familiar sight at local protests, riding her bright red scooter and carrying a sign that said “Honk if you love birth control.” Although she was over 80, Lois was more energetic and committed than other activists a quarter of her age. She spent many hours picketing outside of Ralph’s Thriftway, in protest of the store’s refusal to carry emergency contraception in its pharmacy, as well as counter-protesting outside of Planned Parenthood when anti-choice picketers gathered there on Fridays with grisly signs depicting late term abortions. Lois put her journalism training to work writing letters to the editor, as well as to the Pharmacy Board, as they deliberated over public policy regarding access to Plan B emergency contraception. Her upbeat, energetic participation and lively presence was treasured by the Olympia community. She will be missed. A public celebration of her life will be held Saturday, December 6 (see above). A private family ceremony is also planned. Memorial donations may be made in Lois’ name to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, 434 West 33rd Street, New York, NY 10001 or to Turning Pointe, PO Box 2014, Shelton WA 98584.
