We have to remember that the people that skewed the picture reporting in the news were the Olympian editors, not the brave souls who rightly went down to the port to protest another death ship coming to Olympia. When I saw the ship coming into the port after 11:00 AM, I knew that a good portion of the vigil crowd would go to the port, and rightly so. I saw the photographer taking the picture of the one argument, and I KNEW that that would be the lead picture, since . . .

By August of 2005, the majority of Americans have turned against the US war against Iraq, which has been going on for 2 1/2 years (or for almost 15 years if the continuing Iraq war is dated from 1991). President Bush's approval rating has dropped to the level of Richard Nixon's during the height of Watergate.

Militarization of the Port of Olympia
Unbeknownst to the residents of Thurston County, on December 10, 2004 the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) established what they call a "permanent security zone" with military control of the Port of Olympia when a military ship comes to the Port. This was done in semi-secret because the public was not informed of this action at the time it was proposed, or when it occurred. Glen Anderson wrote a very good article in last month’s Works in Progress explaining the 2nd Annual Choosing Peace Series to be held in the Olympia area this year. Like last year, it is to be held around the time of September 11th, since that has become a dividing line for many people as they try to make sense of the changing conditions in the world. 9/11/01 was indeed a traumatic time for many, but also, for many of us, it was a continuation of the shocking and horrifying events that have happen throughout history, especially U.S. foreign policy in the 20th Century.
