Interview with Fred King, Capitol Campus Design Advisory Committee Chair

August 2008

by WIP News Service

Works In Progress: I understand that there were two presentations regarding the rezone proposal made by City of Olympia staff to the Capitol Campus Design Advisory Committee (CCDAC)?

Fred King: The first time we were just told there was a rezone proposal, and CCDAC members said we don’t know what the effect of this will be, give us some graphic illustrations of how this will affect views. The second time, the city staff came back with some building block type illustrations that purported to show how it would affect views from several locations on campus, although it wasn’t . . .

No quarters from RVs

July 2008

by WIP News Service

As the concrete dries on 'beautified' intersections, created with taxpayer money that could have and should have been spent on building affordable housing, the Olympia City Council is wasting no time in waging its continued war on the poor. The council is pushing through OMC 10.16.030 which will make it illegal to park an RV on any street in the city limits. And they are doing so, not surprisingly, at the cloaked behest of the Downtown Business Association (ODA), and without a public hearing on the issue.

Judge Burgess commented on the over 250 letters he received on Briana?s behalf. Neil Fox, Ms. Waters? attorney, argued that the average of both Washington and Oregon cases was one and a half years per arson. Mr. Fox argued for five years with serving one and half suspending three and a half. The . . .

There are local responses and events relating to the global food crisis. Heather Flores spoke at Traditions Fair Trade Cafe about her ideas on food, gardening and community on May 6th. She also sold her book Food Not Lawns which is a well-written manifesto on a holistic approach to living your politics and growing your own potatoes. Photo: Who loves Olympia best?

by the WIP News Service

Written into the 2/11/08 Minutes of the Olympia Land Use and Environment Committee is a disturbing statement: “We already have the vision for downtown. To appeal to the public, we need to move from strategy to tactics.” Present at this meeting were Councilmembers Karen Messmer, Rhenda Iris Strub, and Joan Machlis, as well as City staff and assorted guests, including former councilmember and Triway Enterprise employee Jeannette Hawkins, and Russ Meixner of Rocky Mountain Development Company, a big contributor to several councilmembers’ campaign funds (see graphic).

OLY 2012: The Future Looks Like Astroturf

May 2008

by WIP News Service

When you hear the words “grass roots,” do you usually think of lobbyists, along with marketing and salespeople, gathering together to pave the way for wealthy developers? Or do you think of someone with a petition on a clipboard, ringing doorbells and sitting at a table at community events, soliciting donations in a coffee can and trying to spread the word and involve anyone who will listen? Nobody interviewed for the article about the future of downtown (see article above) had heard about Oly2012, a supposedly “grass roots” organization, until the Olympian started talking . . .

Condo outbreak at downtown waterfront approaches

April 2008

Photo: A rendition of the future Olympia, taken from the Triway Enterprises website.

by WIP News Service

While developer Triway is once again scheming to transform Olympia’s waterfront into a profitable bloc of condominiums available only to the very wealthy, Olympia’s new, development-friendly City Council is doing what it can to facilitate the process. On March 22, the City of Olympia conducted a forum, ostensibly to get public feedback about a proposed zoning change on the downtown waterfront area between Capital Lake and Budd Bay, the isthmus between Water Street and the 4th and 5th Avenue Bridges.
