[The Olympia-Rafah Mural Project is an official recognition, by the people of Olympia, Washington, of the sister city relationship that exists with the city of Rafah, Palestine. Through the act of creating a collaborative public mural, we will express our desire for Palestinian self-determination, which is rooted in honoring the common struggles for global justice faced by marginalized people everywhere. [Canada is often thought of as our peaceful, docile neighbor to the north. Even a potential enclave to retreat to when the United States becomes intolerable to live in. However, the reality is quite different with internal problems there reflecting the glaring social inadequacies we face. Acceptance of immigrants is one of the most pertinent to those in the US Northwest and Canada’s policies are becoming more adamantly conservative with each passing year.

Interview by Janet Blanding.
Janet Blanding: You have said that one of your top issues is making government more open. In what ways is the government of the City of Olympia currently “closed,” and what can be done to remedy that?
Meta Hogan: The yardstick that I use is whether people are able to get the information that they need, and to what extent citizens are invited to participate. The City of Olympia is very open in many ways, with public comment opportunities at council meetings and having the meetings televised.

Although the Bush administration's Roadmap for Peace is mentioned in the mainstream media, the realities of Palestinian life are often distorted or unreported. Many Americans hear nothing about the Separation Fence (a.k.a. the Apartheid Wall) that Israel constructs, separating many Palestinians from their land, water, schools and services, thus putting Palestine under even tighter Israeli control. It is rare that Americans are able to hear critical analyses of the situation or perspectives that connect the situation to overall American foreign policy.
